Recommended by the prestigious Cuban musician Leo Brower and with an unfathomable talent, the Cuban flutist Alaima Gonzalez arrived at the Dominican Republic in the year 1995.

Alaima is a graduate from “Escuela Nacional de Artes” and from the “Instituto Superior de Artes” from La Habana Cuba. She has a bachelor’s in music, Magna Cum Laude, from the “Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo” in the Dominican Republic.

At 15 years old she debuted with the  “Orquesta Sinfonica Juvenil” from Camaguey Cuba under the direction from outstanding musicians from the “Simon Bolivar” orchestra of Venezuela. Was invited to the Camerata “Brindis de Salas” and a member of the National Symphonic Orchestra of Cuba even before graduating.

Her talent and dedication have made her recipient of important awards in her musical career, among them: first place in the Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart competition hosted by Embassy of Austria in the Cuban capital, second place in the National Music Competition from the camera de la Habana, and first place in National Music competition, year 2000 hosted by the Dominican Counsel of Music, and UNESCO.

Alaima Gonzalez has been a teacher for the last 20 years of the traverse flute as well as professor of flute in the Dominican National Conservatory of Music. With this labor she has propelled the career of several of her students that today are me member of juvenile’s orchestras, bands and even members of the National symphonic orchestra of the Dominican Republic. Her labor as a teacher has transcended the Dominican frontiers and she has given masters classes in Colombia and Brazil.

Since 2014 she has been the principal flute of the National symphonic Orchestra of the Dominican Republic. She has performed as a soloist for the Symphonic Orchestra in the most important concert halls on the Dominican Republic such as Teatro Nacional Eduardo Brito, El Gran Teatro del Cibao, and Higuey Bassilica, under the direction of Maetro Julio De Windt and Jose Antonio Molina. Alaima has been a part of the “Festival Musical de Santo Domingo” hosted by Fundación Sinfonia from its beginnings in 1997.

As a chamber musician she is part of the Duo Guloya together with the Colombian musician Rafael Rodriguez. Duo Guloya has participated in international venues such as Colombia, Brazil, and the United States performing Latin American and music from the Antilles. In 2017 Alaima recorder the Sonata for Flute form the Cuban composer Leo Brower.

Alaima is a flutist on constant preparation and growth. She has taken master classes with renowned flutist Jeffrey Khaner, principal flute of the Philadelphia Philharmonic Orchestra and with the flutist and teacher Jan Vinci , resident Artist of the Skidmore College at  Saratoga Springs New York since 1986. Also, with Jo Hagen, once principal flute of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. Recently in 2018 she participated in the Galway flute festival that was held at the city of Weggis in Switzerland.

In 2016 Alaima created the Alaima Gonzalez Nymph Project, and the same year inaugurated the first International Latin American Flute Festival of the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean.
